Biographical
Former U.S. Magistrate Judge David E. Jones has a private Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) career with Resolute Systems, LLC. Judge Jones concentrates his ADR practice on the resolution of complex commercial, class action, intellectual property, employment, municipal liability (e.g., excessive force), and contract disputes. In addition to acting as a mediator and arbitrator in state and federal civil matters, Judge Jones also serves as a discovery referee. He is a Board Member of the Dispute Resolution Section of the Wisconsin State Bar, where he has published on remote mediation practice.
Prior to his service as a magistrate judge in the Eastern District of Wisconsin, he was a partner in the Madison, Wisconsin, and Washington, D.C., offices of Heller Ehrman and then Perkins Coie, where he focused on antitrust and intellectual property and tried over twenty cases to verdict. Judge Jones also maintained an active pro bono practice, representing inmates in constitutional challenges to their conditions of confinement and victims of discrimination. He taught Legal Writing and the American Legal System as an adjunct at the University of Wisconsin Law School.
From 1995 to 2001, Judge Jones served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin (Madison), where he tried cases ranging from attempted murder to civil violations of the Clean Air Act. He began his career in the U.S. Army, where he served in the Army General Counsel's Office in the Pentagon.
He clerked for Chief Judge David B. Sentelle of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, was a Distinguished Military Graduate of Creighton University, and received his J.D. with honors from Creighton Law School in 1987, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the law review.
